CYE - 410kHz - Crystal Lake, PA

CYE, tucked way away up in the Pennsylvania hills outside Scranton.

This beacon is the reason you've got a four-wheel drive vehicle. It's a couple of miles up (that means UP), and yet further up, winding dirt tracks up into hunting territory. For all its fabulous location near the top of a mountain, it doesn't radiate at all well, and the large part of that is the installation: The enclosed site is small, there is little evidence of any ground system other than a token bit of wire going down from the hut; the antenna is low (the two poles are less than 20' high), and small (the poles are barely 60' apart) and of an inverted triangular design (feedpoint slanting up to poles, joined across the top) which is arguably a highly inefficient configuration. But it's lots of fun to find and visit.
